Shhhhh…LISTEN
It’s not just one of my favorite comedy movies. . .
It’s one of my favorite scenes in a comedy movie
and it lasts all but about 35 seconds;
but it’s a classic 35 seconds. . .

And even though
“The Excuse”

Ever have a moment like this?
You try to explain. . .
but you are in no way getting heard,
or even having the chance to do so. . .
C o m m u n i c a t i o n
is such a huge part of what we do every day
and it is truly good question:

A better question:

It’s one of my favorite presentations,
I’m giving it again this week to a group of Nurses, Social Workers, Care-Givers who are experts in this field
. . . or. . . ?
It’s what we know,
what we know we know,
what we’d bet our lives that we know,
that often we don’t for the life of us,
act like we know at at all, isn’t it?
I will through film clips like,

and others that use how words

and words

are not always the same kind of
W O R D S
at all.
Through interactive exercises
and yes through some fairly embarrassing play-acting on my part,
we will be led to look,
to listen,
to E X P E R I E N C E
this wonderful art of Communication

we are called to do

The most important step
is a willingness to

to connect in a way words
can never convey
but direly attempt to,
just the same.
That W I L L I N G N E S S
doesn’t take
HOW-TO
so much as

and it’s often exhausting and fruitless. . .
But, when there’s a

an U N D E R S T A N D I N G,
a D I S C E R N M E N T
far exceeding what

and so very much worth it. . .
I don’t want you to Listen to me. . .
I want you to Hear me—–

and my mouth will never be able to whisper,
your ears will never hear,
your eyes–never read. . .

TWO POWERFUL WORDS
This 2-Word Quote From Writer
Kurt Vonnegut
Will Change the Way You Work
(and the way Y O U C A R E)
When it comes to insights about work, there are tweaks and there are game changers. Which isn’t to diminish tweaks. Sometimes, the perfect scheduling hack or productivity ritual can radically improve how much you get done.
But no hack or routine will change the fundamental way you view your work — how much satisfaction you get out of it, the way you see your work relating to the rest of your life, the terror you feel about your inadequacies. For that, only wisdom will do.
Helpfully, creativity site 99U recently dug out more than a half dozen gems of just this sort of wisdom, and what’s even better for the time pressed, one of the best of them is only two words long.
PRACTICE BECOMING
It comes from celebrated author Kurt Vonnegut, who penned this succinct nugget of professional wisdom in response to a high school student who was given the assignment of writing his favorite author. Vonnegut’s kind reply included these two powerful words: practice becoming.
If the phrase doesn’t immediately strike you like a thunderclap that’s because Vonnegut’s advice might require a little more explanation. He tells his correspondent:
Practice any art, music, singing, dancing, acting, drawing, painting, sculpting, poetry, fiction, essays, reportage, no matter how well or badly, not to get money and fame, but to experience becoming, to find out what’s inside you, to make your soul grow.
Seriously! I mean starting right now, do art and do it for the rest of your lives. Draw a funny or nice picture of Ms. Lockwood, and give it to her. Dance home after school, and sing in the shower and on and on.
That sounds pleasant enough, but why is it so profound? Sure, Vonnegut’s advice jives with scientific research that shows exercising your creativity will make you happy even if you’re terrible at your chosen form of self-expression, but that’s far from the most powerful part of this dead simple but potentially life-changing message.
Like many wise thinkers, Vonnegut recognizes that “success,” if you view it as a single, final destination, will always be out of reach. There will always be someone you can compare yourself to and find yourself wanting. There will always be more to want and more to dream. Instead of working to reach some fixed goal (and planning on finally enjoying yourself then), enjoy the the process of working and living itself, the self-exploration and moment-by-moment accomplishment it gives you.
Or, in other words, you’re always going to be in the process of becoming who you want to be, so you may as well get good at becoming and learn to enjoy it. It’s a powerful message for our endlessly ambitious, angst-filled age.
Looking for more down-to-earth wisdom from Vonnegut? Here’s his letter in its entirety, including a fun “assignment” he gives the young man who reached out. You could give it a try yourself if you want to practice becoming yourself tonight.

Harmonics
It’s true. . .
I’m a One – Song – Musician
When it comes to the Harmonica the very first song I learned,
ended up literally being the last one:
O L D S U S A N N A
I usually get lots of mileage out of that when I’m giving a Keynote Speech.
I relay it back to the strong fact that there’s not really much need for a
One-Song-Musician.
I mean, I can’t book a Concert Hall and play Old Susanna for a solid two-and-a-half hours to be followed by another fifteen minute encore, right?
The point?
Just because we do
ONE OUTSTANDING DEED,
it doesn’t let us off the hook for never having to do another one–EVER!
As much as there just isn’t much need for a One-Song-Musician,
there’s not a whole lot of curtain calls for a
One-Deed-Good-Samaritan, either.
We are NOT called to do good,
to be Compassionate,
Caring,
Understanding,
Accepting,
Forgiving,
just once or once in a while. . .
but E V E R Y T I M E
I had just given an early morning talk to an area Rotary Club
and actually began the talk without saying a word. . .
just pulling out my harmonica and playing my beloved,
O N E S O N G
I made my point.
I finished my talk to a standing ovation
(I knew I could play THAT song, but I had no idea it would cause such a powerful reaction)
and after staying around and talking with several people,
I made my way to the nearest STARBUCKS for my morning cup of coffee before during some patient visits,
a funeral
and another talk to end the day.
I KID YOU NOT
while I was standing in line,
there was a guy who came into a now fairly crowded STARBUCKS to get his morning fix actually
playing a harmonica!
Everyone kind of stopped. . .
I mean texting, googling, face-booking, tweeting, talking–
and looked up as the guy get in line right beside me playing his bluesy song.
When he came up for a breath,
I told him that I too was a HARMONICIST
“Really,” he sounded surprised?
“Really, ” I echoed back,
“but I’m a very specialized harmonicist.”
“Specialized?”
“Yes sir! I know just one song, but I know it real, real, REAL good–Old Susanna!”
We both laughed.
I asked him what he liked playing the best and he answered me by playing some rag-tag-hot-bluesy-piece.
I told him
T H A T
just earned him a free cup of coffee.
Now that our order was in, we went to the end of the other line to wait to our Fixes.
He told me that he played at as many amateur nights as he could find,
but often had to compete unfairly with guitarists.
Our orders now delivered,
I shook his hand,
thanked him for his mini-concert and wished him continued success and blessings in the present and future.
His last sentence to me was of pure music. . .
Grammy worthy:
“Thanks, my man. . .
I’m just a song looking for a pair of ears!”
Ain’t we all?
Well, worth a cup of coffee, huh?
Who would have thought that I walked in thirsting for a Breve Venti Latte
and walked out with my latte,
a smile,
a story and a great memory that I,
that we,
are m o r e,
so very much more than meets the eye or the ear.

This week is a very Holy week in the Judeo-Christian population that spans the World.

Sign of the Times
I’ve known Stephanie Ford Jessup nearly all of her life; her parents, Tom and Diane are two of the finest people I know and her family is one of the best ever to be called friends.
I accidentally came across her video last week.
Stephanie is an American Sign Language Teacher at Medina High School.
You can easily tell that American Sign Language (ASL) is a very visual language…I’ve come to learn over the past week that with Signing, the brain processes this linguistic information through our eyes…what I love about this language is what Stephanie does so awesomely:
THE SHAPE, PLACEMENT, AND MOVEMENT OF THE HANDS, AS WELL AS THE FACIAL AND BODY MOVEMENTS, ALL PLAY IMPORTANT PARTS IN NOT ONLY CONVEYING INFORMATION, BUT ACTUALLY EXPRESSING AND MAKING IT UNDERSTOOD.
Heavy stuff, huh…but WHAT WE JUST SAW is feather light and more, inspires you to float about the what is said or heard, but begs to be experienced.
SO. . .what about the song that was being signed?
Uh-Ohhhhhhhh. . .tricky stuff no matter how we communicate or are communicated.
The Lyrics:
MY LOVER’S GOT HUMOUR
SHE’S THE GIGGLE AT A FUNERAL
KNOWS EVERYBODY’S DISAPPROVAL
I SHOULD’VE WORSHIPPED HER SOONER
IF THE HEAVENS EVER DID SPEAK
SHE’S THE LAST TRUE MOUTHPIECE
EVERY SUNDAY’S GETTING MORE BLEAK
A FRESH POISON EACH WEEK
“WE WERE BORN SICK” YOU HEARD THEM SAY IT
MY CHURCH OFFERS NO ABSOLUTES
SHE TELLS ME ‘WORSHIP IN THE BEDROOM’
THE ONLY HEAVEN I’LL BE SENT TO
IS WHEN I’M ALONE WITH YOU
I WAS BORN SICK
BUT I LOVE IT
COMMAND ME TO BE WELL
AAAY, AMEN. AMEN. AMEN.
TAKE ME TO CHURCH
I’LL WORSIP LIKE A DOG AT THE SHRINE OF YOUR LIES
I’LL TELL YOU MY SINS SO YOU CAN SHARPEN IN YOUR KNIFE
OFFER ME THAT DEATHLESS DEATH
GOOD GOD, LET ME GIVE YOU MY LIFE
IF I’M A PAGAN OF THE GOOD TIMES
MY LOVER’S THE SUNLIGHT
TO KEEP THE GODDESS ON MY SIDE
SHE DEMANDS A SACRIFICE
DRAIN THE WHOLE SEA
GET SOMETHING SHINY
SOMETHING MEATY FOR THE MAIN COURSE
THAT’S A FINE-LOOKING HIGH HORSE
WHAT YOU GOT IN THE STABLE
WE’VE A LOT OF STARVING FAITHFUL
THAT LOOKS TASTY
THAT LOOKS PLENTY
THIS IS HUNGRY WORK
TAKE ME TO CHURCH
I’LL WORSHIP LIKE A DOG AT THE SHRINE OF YOUR LIES
I’LL TELL YOU MY SINS SO YOU CAN SHARPEN YOUR KNIFE
OFFER ME MY DEATHLESS DEATH
GOOD GOD, LET ME GIVE YOU MY LIFE
NO MASTERS OR KINGS
WHEN THE RITUAL BEGINS
THERE IS NO SWEETER INNOCENCE THAN OUR GENTLE SIN
IN THE MADNESS AND SOIL OF THAT SAD EARTHLY SCENE
ONLY THEN I AM HUMAN
ONLY THEN I AM CLEAN
OOOH OH. AMEN. AMEN. AMEN.
TAKE ME TO CHURCH
I’LL WORSHIP LIKE A DOG AT THE SHRINE OF YOUR LIES
I’LL TELL YOU MY SINS SO YOU CAN SHARPEN YOUR KNIFE
OFFER ME THAT DEATHLESS DEATH
GOOD GOD, LET ME GIVE YOU MY LIFE.
Your interpretation?
When I asked Stephanie for permission to use this, she warned me that one of the interpretations of this song is related to gay people who go to church seeking to worship God but instead are told they won’t go to Heaven unless they’re Straight and about the countless frustrations of having a partner and others looking down and condemning them.
True enough, look at the original YouTube video of the song.
Some say it slams the Church for trying to be the Church.
The author, Hozier himself said that the song is not really about either:
“THE SONG IS ABOUT ASSERTING YOURSELF AND RECLAIMING YOUR HUMANITY THROUGH AN ACT OF LOVE. TURNING YOUR BACK ON THE THEORETICAL THING, SOMETHING THAT’S NOT TANGIBLE, AND CHOOSING TO WORSHIP OR LOVE SOMETHING THAT IS TANGIBLE AND REAL”
Pssssssst. . .all of that means nothing, not even what the writer of the song/lyrics, does it?
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU?
Not just this song or any other. . .but what’s
C O M M U N I C A T E D
what’s actually Said
what’s actually Heard
Really. . .
It’s one thing to hear the lyrics
It’s one thing to see the Signs
It’s one thing to watch the facial expressions
It’s one thing to observe the body movements
It’s one thing to KNOW the Person Signing
It’s one thing to interpret it through your filter and experiences. . .
Just when you think you’ve GOT IT
when it comes to Communication
Uhhhhhhhhhhh. . .
YOU DON’T
Is there such a thing as a Universal Language?
UNSPOKEN
but
HEARD,
UNDERSTOOD?
Maybe not. . .
Maybe not if it doesn’t Universally includes us ALL
Hear That
Speak That
Experience That
SHARE THAT. . .anyway it needs to be heard, spoken, experienced, Understood
Always
ALL-WAYS!
It’s so much more than just The Sign of the Times.
