Monkeying Around

Now, there’s Monkeying Around and then there’s MONKEYING AROUND!

The story goes that a group of Scientists placed 5 monkeys in a cage and in the middle, a ladder with a bunch of bananas at the top.

When a monkey would make his way to the top of the ladder to get a banana the rest of the monkeys would get splashed with cold water.

It didn’t take too long for the other four monkeys who weren’t climbing the ladder to beat up the one who attempted to climb for the bananas–even a dumb monkey doesn’t want to get splashed with cold water one time or over and over.

Soon, there were no monkeys attempting to climb the ladder, banana or no banana.

This is where it gets interesting.

The Scientists then decided to substitute one of the monkeys. Wouldn’t you know, the first thing that the new monkey did was to go up that ladder for the bananas…he got beat up. It didn’t take the new monkey too many beatings to figure out NOT to climb for the banana.

A 2nd monkey was then substituted for another monkey and the same thing happened. The new monkey got pummeled until he climbed no more.

The same happened with the 3rd, 4th and 5th new monkeys exchanged out for the new ones.

What finally was left was a group of five new monkeys WHO NEVER RECEIVED A COLD SHOWER, continuing to beat any new monkey brought into the cage with a ladder and the bananas.

The theory, it seems, if it were possible to ask the monkeys why they would beat up all those who attempted to go up the ladder, the answer would most likely be:

“I DON’T KNOW–THAT’S THE WAY THINGS ARE DONE AROUND HERE!”

It’s amazing isn’t it. We sometimes do things, personally and professionally, because, “THAT’S THE WAY THEY’VE ALWAYS BEEN DONE!” We won’t ever question IT which means we’re going to get the
