It was a simple gift from out daughter. Tickets to see Billy Joel in concert. They were “Cheap Seats.”
We didn’t care…it was nice to be out and see a guy I’ve followed since his first album to his latest work–including his only classical album, which most don’t even know exists.
I had to conduct a funeral. They went to the casino for a buffet dinner and a little gambling before the concert. We took two cars. I arrived first to the concert and went to our seats in the thin air section and within moments received their call that we had been granted FRONT ROW SEATS by a stage hand who was wandering the corridor giving out tickets to ‘ladies who look nice and aren’t afraid to dance.’
They told him about me, and even threw down the MINISTER card, (HOW COULD HE REFUSE, NOW) and he granted them three front row seats.
WOW!
WHY? Why them? Why Us?
What about the other 9,997 folks in the arena?
If they had been 10 seconds early or late there would have been no meeting, no tickets.
Many have explained and flat out stated, “It’s because you are all so nice and do so much for others…it’s GOOD KARMA!”
REALLY?
Is that a good explanation? Is it true?
Was it bad Karma for the rest and what they obviously DIDN’T do to cop the great seats?
Questions with guesses, presuppositions and opinions for answers but nothing concrete, huh?
Does it ultimately matter? Did the World reverse on it’s axis? Were we THAT deserving.
Again, answer-less questions. . . .
But…we had an awesome time. We sang, we danced, we hugged and we had a fantastic memory created for us we’ll never be able to forget.
Karma-rific?
I’m never fully sure of what I deserve or don’t. . .Karma has never been my motivation for doing good or, or NOT DOING BAD.
Bottom line? The doing good always makes me feel good…the doing bad makes for a sleepless night. SELFISHLY, I’ve always picked the former more than the latter.
Hmmmmm….doing good to feel good?
Fate me that, Billy Joel. . .so that the Lights Never Go out on Broadway or have us looking at things, Sideways. . . .

This is such a great story, Chuck! A serendipity that couldn’t happen to better folks. I’m listening to Billy Joel for the rest of the day.

It was epic…I’ve been listening to him ever since then on SIRUS Radio. Thanks as always, Dorothy for your kind words, thoughts and support.

If doing good = good karma, why then did Christ die on the cross? Not even from a religious perspective, but from history, do I say this nor from the point of departure that Christ could have prevented what happened to him (don’t we all?). But if anyone should have had good “KARMA” it would have been JC…or Martin Luther King, or persons that tragically lose their loved ones.
I thought one time.,..ok, ruminated actually, over the topic: Are we rewarded for our bad times (bad luck, sad things, etc.) with happy times or do we “pay” for happy times or good deeds with those thinks. Happy/good times means a spiritual invoice or bad/sad times means a happy voucher?
I reviewed happy, sad, good, bad going backward to see which came first. Impossible, unless you begin from the point of departure that while in the womb all I is well and happy – warm environment, food, intimate proximity to maternal care…then ugh…squeeze out to the cold word and what, the baby begins to cry. Therefore, I concluded life is a series of great, good, happy things – for which w pay later.
I now, I’m a bummer…not really, just reflective.
ChuckBehrens says
It’s all reflective SEMANTICS…saying the SAME THING…which is the greatest source of peace of all, isn’t it? At the end of the day, we’re all saying the same thing, and more, we are all RIGHT!
